Breaking the Mold of Traditional Farming
Awarua deer farmer Cam Nelson has rewritten the script on sustainable farming in Southland, showcasing a strong vision and unwavering commitment to environmental values that have earned him the supreme award at the Southland Ballance Farm Environment Awards. From Sheep to Deer: A New Chapter
Since acquiring the 164ha property in 2003, Nelson Farming Company has undergone a significant transformation, shifting its focus from a 50:50 sheep and deer operation to a solely deer farming enterprise. The farm now boasts 250 mixed-age stags, 400 breeding hinds, 180 R2 velvet stags, and 180 R2 hinds, which have been sold in-calf.

A Culture of Continuous Improvement
Cam Nelson’s proactive approach to benchmarking and implementing expert advice has been instrumental in driving ongoing development and adaptability in the industry. The team’s commitment to continuous improvement has enabled them to refine and enhance their practices, staying ahead of the curve.
“The key to our success lies in our ability to adapt and evolve, staying true to our core values and principles,” said Mr. Nelson.
Genetic Selection and Biodiversity
The farm’s robust genetic programme focuses on selecting desirable traits, such as high velvet production and disease resistance. DNA testing of all hinds guides breeding decisions, resulting in an annual velvet yield of 3400kg. The team’s attention to biodiversity is evident in their initiatives, including native plantings, pond creation, and the replacement of eucalyptus with native species.

Water Conservation and Soil Management
Mr. Nelson’s exceptional attention to detail in enhancing biodiversity is also evident in his commitment to soil and water conservation. The use of sediment traps and water flow management on relatively flat land, combined with substantial investment in shelter and shade, supports biodiversity across the farm.
